Griffin, J. R. 1976. Ecological Survey of Junipero Serra Peak for Botanical Area Designation. USFS Contract 1180-PSW-75
|
Description |
The sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana) community is the outstanding ecological value on Junipero Serra Peak (JSP). This JSP sugar pine forest (Map 1) is closely related to the more coastal sugar pine stands on Cone Peak. The relationship of "both these isolated south Coast Range forests to distant, more continuous sugar pine populat- ions raises important questions about climatic change, plant migration, and plant evolution. The general situation on JSP is so inter- esting that Stebbins and Taylor (1973) selected the peak as a pot- ential Natural landmark in a National Park Service survey.
